Maybelle Fox is a recurring character in the Amazon Prime Video television series, A League of Their Own. She is portrayed by Molly Ephraim.

Biography[]

Maybelle is seen at the AAGPBL try-outs held at Baker Field in the first episode, Batter Up, alongside the future players of the league. She gets selected to be on one of the four original teams, the Rockford Peaches. She has no trouble during Charm School, quoting "maybe we died, and in heaven they make your house a department store" when they first attend. Unlike some of her teammates, she seems excited to get "makeovers", and finds it easy to fulfil the league's expectations of her.

Maybelle has a larger than life personality, despite her adoration of all things feminine. She explains to Jo in Batter Up that guys often see her appearance and assume she's different than she actually is, and that she'll "talk their ear off and eat more hotdogs than they can". She has a very compassionate and understanding character, seen very upset when Jo gets traded to the South Bend Blue Sox in Full Count, and attempting to curb Shirley's fears of Jo's queerness later in the same episode.

Trivia[]

  • Maybelle plays centre field and her player number is 3.
  • In Batter Up, she tells Jo that she ditched her last guy before she came out to the league.
  • In her pre-game speech in Stealing Home, she mentions that she's the six-time winner of the Little Miss Corn Chowder competition.
  • During Full Count, she mentions in passing to Shirley "it's like my oldest always says", implying that she not only has a child, but multiple children. She is seen knitting a small pink jumper in the same scene.
  • She is often seen on the bench alongside Shirley during games.
  • Molly Ephraim (the actress that plays Maybelle), was pregnant during shooting, and in almost all of her scenes she's holding some sort of item in front of her stomach to hide it.
  • Maybelle's name is a reference to Maybelle Blair, former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player, and part of the inspiration for the series.
  • She went out on a date with a G.I named Tommy, mentioned in Stealing Home, and he gave Maybelle his photo that she put inside her brassiere. She says that she felt bad for not kissing him on behalf of his one grey tooth, and that she thought the picture was why she'd been hitting so good, so was troubled when she lost the photo in the sixth episode before their game.
  • Along with Jess, and some of her other teammates, Maybelle had adopted the "no changes" superstitions. In Stealing Home she mentions that she hadn't changed her underwear since they'd started the sweep.
  • Maybelle's roommate for the majority of the season is Jo, though she also roomed with Shirley when the team stayed at the convent.
